About

OUR MISSION

Over the years street cultures have found common ground in the creative processes they use to help their respective cultures progress. Graffiti artists, skateboarders, BMX riders, hardcore bands, rappers, street wear companies and everyone in between have come together, borrowed from each other, helped each other grow and above all knocked down the barriers that once divided them. The idea of a “collective” was taken to new levels by our generation. The Art of Storytelling is a publication about the creative process behind street culture and the celebration of that collective relationship; period.

OUR APPROACH

Our publication is content driven. Information is more accessible than any other period in history, as a result readers demand more. When we approach an article or interview we make sure to do it in a way that has never been done before. We do not want readers to purchase our publication because of one good article, or a few catchy photos. We want our publication to be a unique collection of new information, something that cannot be found in a Google search or on Wikepedia. Our goal is to create a tangible and timeless product. We give our audience a reason to purchase our publication.

OUR STORY

The Art of Storytelling started nearly ten years ago in suburban New Jersey. Without the help of advertising, a web page or an art department we grew into a recognizable brand. Word of mouth and quality content helped us get noticed. The Art of Storytelling has grown into more than a brand; it’s a vibe. We create with a level of insight that cannot be taught in a classroom, we are the people doing things that onlookers write about and our readers appreciate the freshness. Subcultures as a whole have drifted far from their roots, The Art of Storytelling brings them back.

EXPOSURE TO NEW MARKETS

In a weakening economy your advertising dollars need to stretch further than ever before. By having skateboarders, BMX riders, street artists, graffiti writers, hip-hop enthusiasts, rockers and street wear brands featured in one publication, The Art of Storytelling offers a level of exposure that other publications cannot. The Art of Storytelling allows you to tap the buying power of individuals you have never been able to reach and industries you normally couldn’t afford to penetrate. Your brand will be introduced to a new set of eyes, a new crop of young consumers whose spending habits are in line with your current demographic. That translates into increased revenue. The Art of Storytelling provides a higher level of exposure with the same advertising dollars.

STORYTELLING MEDIA

-TERROR IN THE BURBS

Terror in the Burbs was our first VHS release. It was produced in the late 90’s and released in 2001. The video was a success and in 2005 enjoyed a DVD re-release, on a limited edition basis, through Beautiful Decay Magazine. The film focused on the Northern Virginia / Baltimore MD graffiti scenes and also featured an in depth interview with Shepard Fairey (OBEY).

-THE ART OF STORYTELLING DVD

The Art of Storytelling DVD is the culmination of years of filming and production. Selling over 6,000 copies worldwide and receiving praise in magazines such as Elemental Magazine, The Art of Storytelling broke the boundaries of what had been done in the past. The DVD’s success was the direct result of it’s adoption by subcultures outside of the street art scene. Distribution of the DVD halted in 2006 as we explored other forms of visual communication, our print magazine being one of them. Going forward the DVD will be available free with all paid subscriptions to The Art of Storytelling Magazine and will continue as a semiannual DVD series.

– JUGHANDLE

Set to release in early 2009, Jughandle is a collection of live, vintage performances and interviews with some of today’s largest bands including My Chemical Romance, Underoath, Every Time I Die, From Autumn to Ashes, Cave In, Funeral For a Friend, and A Static Lullaby.

– STORYTELLING TV

Storytelling TV is a joint venture with Young and Balding productions, a new and edgy production company based out of New Jersey. The Art of Storytelling TV brings another visual component to our brand. Unique mini documentaries covering a wide array of topics and subcultures will be released through the internet and used to drive traffic to our site, serving as an introduction to our brand and promoting new readership. Within the last year Young and Balding has produced videos for Pace Won as well as Seventh Letter Clothing’s Seven day Project, boasting online views of over 50,000.

THE ART OF STORYTELLING TOYS

The Art of Storytelling Toys is one of the most interesting side projects the magazine is currently pursuing. The Art of Storytelling has linked up with long time friend and sculptor Danny “The Farrow” Anniello. Danny has worked with NECA toys, sculpting for the latest Harry Potter Movie and also produces a line of custom figures sold on a limited edition basis. His creations sell all over the world and are highly sought after by collectors. He has been working with some of today’s biggest street artists to develop a brand of vinyl toys for The Art of Storytelling. Our first release will be called “Eyeball Kid”, designed by graffiti artist Chip 7.
