THE GET OVER SECTION:

ZEPHYR – Talks bout his early day’s as a graffiti artist, the creative environment that existed on the L.E.S. of Manhattan in the early 80’s, how graffiti was transported to Europe, The Fun Gallery and much more. Zephyr took so much time to work with us on making this an amazing, one of a kind interview.

FEATURES:

JOR – Talks about his move from the graffiti world to the fashion world as a sneaker designer and now his break into the art world. This guy has reinvented himself over and over again. He is going to be the next big thing in the art world, the next street based artist to make power moves…mark my words. He is an extremely talented artist with great insight. We interviewed him on 3 separate occasions to bring you a truly great, in depth interview. Expect to see plenty of hand drawn pieces and original photography.

DALEK – Lets us in on his days as a team manager for DUFFS, how he got his start doing art, going to school in Japan, Hardcore shows, 80’s films, views on the current economic climate, his views on 2012 and the end of the world and so much more. Chip 7 has apprenticed for Dalek for a few years and he is the one who conducted the interview. Don’t expect to see generic questions, we had a true insider do the interview. Everyone will enjoy reading this one, it is not like any other DALEK interview you have ever read.

ELI GESNER – Eli laces us with photography for the early Zoo York days, photos that have never been released before of Harold Hunter, Justin Pierce, Jason Lee, Rodney Smith, Mike Hernandez, Thomas Cambell, Harmony Korine, Robbie Gangemmi and many more. Eli did a great interview for us and also gave us photo commentary for all the photos. Expect to see the photos laid out so that you can truly enjoy them. I still look at this section and can’t believe how sick it is. Classic shit.

KEN KELLY – Manowar, KISS, Frank Frezetta? Whatttt!! Ken Kelly is a legend in the art world, from Book Covers to Album Covers his images are classic. Imagine talking to your really cool uncle about how shit was back in the day. That is what it was like interviewing Ken. He told us so much crazy shit, stuff that you never could have imagined. The interview along with original photography make this section sick.

ESTEVAN ORIOL - Two and a half hours on the phone with Estevan talking about JOKER and the history of the company; how it started, all the crazy ups and downs, ships from China with $300K of clothing and no money, crazy Chinese business partners, Bankrupt Jewish business partners, working out of Starbucks. This is THE BEST SECTION IN THE BOOK… Everyone interviews Estevan about his photography so I didn’t want to do that and I am glad I didn’t because this conversation held my attention for the full two and a half hours. I didn’t cut one piece of the interview. Estevan is also working on getting us classic photography documenting the history of JOKER. I am so stoked on this interview.

THE GETUP KIDS - We spoke with Matt Pryor of The Getup Kids for this one. This was a really good last minute interview that came out of left field. The Getup Kids have undoubtedly mad a huge impact on the indie music scene and the music we listen to today. We got to ask Matt his take on the current state of indie music and we also got him to take us on a trip down memmory lane, revealing some intricite details behind the making of some of their albums. This is yet another feature with some vintage photography.

CLAYTON PATTERSON – If you haven’t heard of Clayton Patterson yet, you need to start doing your homework. Clayton has been documenting the Lower East Side of Manhattan for over 25 years. He was thrown into the public eye during the Tompkins Square Park Riots. He was one of the first people to use the consumer video camera to capture police wrongdoing. We talked to Clayton about his experiences documenting the L.E.S and also about the impact technology is having on street culture.

JONATHAN MEHRING -

THE SOAPBOX:

Method Man – CBS Crew President ANGER – Animal Bike’s Oba Stanley – MMA Legend Bas Rutten – Phat Beats owner Joseph Abajian – (3 others To be determined)

Ok so this is a great story. I was down in Virginia for the Issue #1 release party and somehow Bas Rutten came up in conversation. I had seen him before, but I am not really that into MMA so I really didn’t know who he was. These guys were showing me his youtube videos and we were dying. This dude is a character. So one of my friends was [...]

So one of my friends was like “I can get this dudes phone number, he would be great for the Soapbox section. I agreed, but after some reasearch and realizing how famous and legendary this guy was I didn’t think there was a way in hell to get in contact with him. Three days later I get a text message from an undisclosed source with Bas Ruttens cell phone number….I was like dope. I called my boy and was like “so who is going to make the introduction. Does this dude know I am going to be calling?” My boy was like “na dude this is on some cold call shit, no one is supposed to have this dudes cell phone” I thought FUCK THIS. This guy is an Animal, he is going to fucking kill me if I call him unannounced on his cell phone no less. If it was an office number that would be cool, but I could see this dude being like “where did you get my fucking number?….who the fuck are you?…..what made you think it was ok to call my cell? But lets be honest, I had to give it a shot, it was too good to pass up. So I call this dude and I have to

admit I was shaking, I really didn’t want to piss this guy off for obvious reasons. So Bas picks up, I state my name, that I publish a magazine and he’s like “This sounds great, lets do this baby!” Just like that. He acted as if we knew eachother for 10 years. I sent him a magazine priority mail and called him two days later. He picks up and he answers “JOEY what up my friend? This magazine is beautiful…the paper….the paper is amazing.” He kept talking about the paper quality….he was like lets do this, I have story’s for days. So we did The Soapbox.

I didn’t want to get some generic stock photo of him so I had to find a photographer in Cali. By a stroke of luck, I end up linking up with Estevan Oriol a couple of days later. He was another one, he acted like we were boys for years….super cool guy and he was down with the magazine and doing stuff with us. A few days later Estevan drove up to Bas Ruttens dojo and they took photos for The Art of Storytelling issue#2 Soapbox… We will have totally original photos of Bas for issue #2 and an original never before told story as well. I love when things come out of left field like this, it is probably the most exciting part of having a magazine.

Check out these Bas Videos.
